Our heroes landed La Tranquillità, to Charouse. Xaviera had taken over as captain while her husband Timeo was off performing trade duties for his father. Their goal was a quick travel from Pourisse to Charouse, seeking to uncover and foil the plot of a Vodacce swordsman known as Vincenzo. From what they had heard, he had stolen a potent artifact from his former master, Giovanni Villanova, and sought to use it to foment chaos in Montaigne.
The coach ride from Pourisse to Charouse was not without event. The heroes were set upon by bandits, who they soundly defeated. Along the way to Charouse, Armand turned them in at a wayside inn frequented by Mousquetaires.
Upon arriving in Charouse, they sought to plan a way to entreat L’Empereur and entrap VIncenzo. A ranking noblewoman in the Court, Apolline du Rice, captured their attention and a plan was formed. She would be the way they gained entrance into the Court.
The best tailor of Charouse, Epifanio, was preparing a gown for Apolline, who planned to attend a very private and formal gathering in the presence of L’Empereur. The heroes met with the tailor and had themselves fitted for finery. From there, they engaged the interest of Apolline in meeting with her, and Xaviera and Skoja befriended the woman through meeting her in her parlor. Invitations were extended to attend L’Empereur’s ball.
Upon the night of the ball, Leonhard made many friends among the nobles of the court who fancied themselves huntsmen. Armand swept along the ballroom dance floor with a different lady swooning upon his arm with every song. Skoja and Xaviera met with L’Empereur at the Lady du Rice’s urging.
L’Empereur seemed a jovial sort upon their meeting, and he invited the ladies to attend him upon a walk in his vast and ever-changing maze garden. Little did he, or they, know that the maze garden would be a trap where Vincenzo would make his move this very night.
Armand made his move to join them, introducing himself to L’Empereur. The group traveled into the maze, and were soon met by a sorely wounded Modesto Lorenzo who revealed Vincenzo’s trap just before the assassins struck. Leonhard had been watching closely despite his engagement with the huntsmen of the court, and excused himself to gather what had been left behind with the palace guards and join his friends in protecting L’Empereur.
The assassins were led by Vincenzo in his guise as Gerard Royer, and the sorcier Henri du Paix. The battle was joined, and the heroes desperately attempted to protect the King of Montaigne from his assailants. Skoja gravely injured du Paix’s hand so that he could not wield his blade. Armand found Vincenzo a most threatening opponent, but fought to keep the Vodacce swordsman’s attentions upon him. Xaviera used her knowledge of poisons to counteract the assassins’ work upon the King of Montaigne as they struck him down.
Although the battle was desperate, the heroes won. Xaviera held down Vincenzo using Fate witchery, while Armand laid the Vodacce low with a hilt to the head. Henri du Paix attempted to escape using porte magic, but Skoja flung a knife at him and Armand fired a pistol at him as he entered his bloody portal. Both saw the sorcier fall as the portal closed. The assassins were all defeated. But L’Empereur was dragged from the scene by Fortune’s guiding hand, in the form of his bizarre and quite insane maze-clowns.
The sorcerous mask was finally lifted from the villain Vincenzo, to reveal his true face. And then, the heroes were stunned into silence by the cocking of eight muskets as Signore Gascone’s Red Guard made their presence known before the entrance of the maze garden.
“Put your hands in the air! You are all under arrest by the order of the Cardinal for the attempted murder of L’Empereur!”
