As the crew of La Tranquilita sought to procure repairs for their damaged ship, Armand slipped off of the ship when they made port in Potenza. It became clear that he sought to find Gerard Royer and exact his revenge. But when he did not return for several hours, the rest of the crew became concerned and tried to find him. Donning disguises as was customary during Carnivale, they took to the streets of Potenza.
The group found that he had discovered the whereabouts of Royer and the villain’s captive, Claudette leFleur. But Royer was not alone; there was a band of Montaigne and Eisen soldiers sequestered with him in la Città Sommersa. The band acquired the services of a gondolier to gain closer inspection of the situation, and found that Armand was captured and at their mercy. But that was not all they were to discover.
Not only were Royer and Claudette present in the ramshackle ruin of the monastery the villains were hiding out in, they were seemingly captives as well! Volker and Matti lead a small crew in a rooftop assault upon the band of mercenaries, while the rest of the group moved quietly to overtake them. The battle was pitched in the Heros’ favor from the start, with the element of surprise working well in their favor.
But the monastery began to fall apart with Volker’s plan to drop the roof on several gunmen. The momentum of the building’s slide into the bay almost cause Armand, Royer, and Claudette to pitch into the waters still tied to the chairs they were unconscious in.
After well-timed rescues, and the capture of the Montaigne who led the mercenaries, the group brought their captives to La Tranquilita. Upon regaining consciousness, Royer told a tale that Xaviera held no doubt was true—that he was not responsible for the death of Achille Beaumont, Armand’s mentor, and he had been framed to take the fall for murder, theft, arson, rape, and dozens of other crimes.
The face of the true villain was unknown, but Royer did have a name… Vincenzo.
